I bet a bunch of old school arcade gamers out there are probably in tears to know that they weren’t the one who beat the 27 year old record. Because, according to Wired Magazine someone in Portland Oregon recently beat the score in a matter of days.

“On April 6, 2010, John McAllister set a preliminary record score of 41,338,740 after 58 hours, streamed live over the Internet, breaking the record set by Scott Safran 27 years earlier.
After a grueling 58 hours of continuous play, John McAllister of Seattle, Washington officially became the best Asteroids player on the planet by scoring an unthinkable 41,338,740 points in the classic 1979 coin-op arcade game. The previous mark of 41,336,440 was set by Scott Safran back in 1982 — the longest standing record in gaming — and was considered virtually unbreakable.”
If you haven’t played asteroids I suggest picking up a copy and giving it a try. Over on the Xbox marketplace they have an updated version of the game.
